How much good can you do for literacy in 24 hours?
On July 25, the Open Books team will participate in Blogathon 2009 and find out!
Remember when you were in school and you would bowl for charity, and for every pin you knocked down you got, say, ten cents? Now picture that going on worldwide with blogs instead of bowling. On July 25, as part of Blogathon 2009, people across the world will update their websites every 30 minutes for 24 hours straight. For this, they collect sponsorships, and at the end of the 'thon all the money raised goes to the deserving charities they selected.
We didn't have to think too hard about staying up for 24 hours: after all, literacy is a gift for all seasons and a driving force for all time.
And so we're inviting you to join in the fun as a reader and sponsor to help us reach our goal of $2,500 and provide an Open Books Buddies scholarship for a whole elementary school class at a deserving school in Chicago.
During Blogathon 2009, Open Books will present 48 irreverently innovative shared stories of fun and frivolity...or, in plainer English, 48 of our infamous Mad Libs, drawn from classic works of fiction and embellished by YOU, our friends across the country! Nabokov with a nose ring? Melville full of monsters? Dumas and a dragon? All of these (and hundreds more) are possible! There will most likely be at least one contest. Might it be a virtual scavenger hunt? Is it as easy as a trivia post? Only time will tell, but prizes are almost certainly in the offing.
There will be jokes. There will be quotes. And at the end of that wild 24 hours there will, with your help, be a class of elementary school students in Chicago who will get an entire semester of Open Books Buddies for the 2009-2010 school year.
