Open Books Buddies
Since 2008, more than
200 adult volunteers have participated weekly as Open Books Buddies in
12 schools across Chicago.
They and their more than
440 elementary school Buddies have shared more than
7,000 extra hours of reading.
98% of the students reported that they enjoyed coming to Buddies each week.
Their teachers reported that
51% of these students are in the lowest skill bracket of their classes and especially need individual help.
Adventures In Creative Writing Field Trips
More than
3,300 students, including ESL and special needs groups, have visited Open Books for Adevntures in Creative Writing field trips.
They have come from more than
40 schools across Chicago.
As a total group, they were
65% African-American, 27% Hispanic, 7% Caucasian, and 1% of other races or heritage.
93% of them reported that they enjoyed the field trip experience.
98% of their teachers reported that they would like to return to Open Books for another field trip.
VWrite
65 high school juniors have participated in VWrite to date.
They and their
60 volunteer mentors worked on college and career communication skills, scholarship applications, email etiquette, and more.
WeWrite / Wordshops
More than 150 adults have participated in WeWrite / Wordshops.
They and their
more than 50 volunteer writing coaches have worked on creative writing topics and career-related writing skills.
