Creative Writing Field Trips
in 2009.

40 schools
across Chicago.
As a total group, they were
65% African-American,
27% Hispanic, 7% Caucasian,
and 1% of other races or heritage.
93% of them reported
that they enjoyed
the field trip experience.
99% of their teachers reported
that they would like to return to Open Books for another field trip.

100 adult volunteers
participated weekly as
Open Books Buddies
in 7 schools across Chicago in 2009.
They and their more than
140 elementary school Buddies
shared more than
4,000 extra hours of reading.
100% of the students reported
that they enjoyed
coming to Buddies each week.
Their teachers reported that
51% of them
are in the lowest skill bracket of
their classes and especially need individual help.

65 high school juniors
participated in
VWrite
in 2009.
They and their
60 volunteer mentors
worked on college and career communication skills scholarship
applications, email etiquette, professionalism, personal issues, and more.

More than
100 adults
participated in
WeWrite
in 2009.
They and their more than
50 volunteer writing coaches
worked on creative writing topics and career-related writing skills.
