"Last week when I was visiting Bucktown, I had a chance to visit with volunteer Frances, who I noticed was knitting a pink fuzzy scarf when she arrived. She explained to me that she's been working on this scarf for her Little Buddy, Angelese, who mentioned that she really wanted a fuzzy scarf someday. Not only that, she's been giving Angelese knitting lessons for the last 5 minutes of the Buddies session as a reward for a good day of reading. Frances wrote down instructions, and gave her a notebook that she has to use to take notes (They're incorporating literacy into everyday activities!). Angelese is loving her knitting lessons so much that a few weeks ago when her dad tried to pick her up early from school, she told him no, she wanted to stay so she didn't miss Buddies!"

"On a bright note, D is now passing all but one of her classes and she is very close to passing all four. Just a few weeks ago she was failing all of her classes -- this is definitely something to celebrate. She seems to truly
be enjoying the VWrite program. I know that D has the potential to go away to college next year and I think she is beginning to believe that she can do it."
