What does the Book Worm Angels program do?
The Book Worm Angels program donates in-classroom lending libraries, grants of children’s books, and reading resource materials to schools and nonprofit partners across Chicago for students to enjoy and share with their families.
I thought schools had their own libraries. Why do they need books?
Many schools do have libraries. Often, though, students can’t take the books home – they must use them in school. In addition, the range of books for purely entertainment reading can be somewhat limited. The Book Worm Angels program goes directly into classrooms to help provide more books to more students and help encourage more reading citywide.

The Book Worm Angels program is open to all Chicago schools. Books are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given according to need.

What kinds of books are included in Book Worm Angels libraries and grants?
Requesting educators and nonprofit groups can ask for specific grade levels of books or a general assortment. Open Books then selects a range of books meeting those parameters, boxes them up, and arranges for pickup or delivery by/to the requesting recipient.
How is the success of the Book Worm Angels program measured?
We invite all participating educators and nonprofit groups to take a survey each year to assess the program and make suggestions for improvement. Where appropriate, we also measure reading test scores and other factors.

What kinds of books can I donate to help support the Book Worm Angels program?
Book Worm Angels is a program at Open Books, which collects and processes all kinds of books to help support its reading and writing programs for thousands of students each year. Any kind of book for any age and on any topic is welcome (including encyclopedias, dictionaries, and adult textbooks!). We fulfill our Book Worm Angels program needs from our total collected stock of children’s books, and use proceeds from all other book donations to help offset operational costs for all our programs.
I want to be absolutely sure that the books I donate go directly to students. Is this possible?
Not directly, no. Open Books does many things with the books it collects, including selling some to help support all of its literacy programs. All children’s books we collect are considered for the Book Worm Angels program, but not all of them are directly used for that purpose.

What about book drives? How do I organize one of those?
We are hugely appreciative of book drives and happy to help you organize one for your community center, church, synagogue, school, or other group. Our Book Drive Book
has everything you’ll need to get started, including everything from marketing suggestions through instructions for arranging a pickup when the drive is done.
Is my book donation in support of the Book Worm Angels program tax-deductible? How do I value the donation for tax purposes?
Yes. Open Books, which runs the Book Worm Angels program, is a registered 501(c)(3) organization, and all book donations to us are tax-deductible. Open Books does not put a value on book donations.
