Wordshop Leaders Wanted!
Wordshop Leaders Wanted!

Are you an experienced educator or workshop leader? Could you volunteer to create and/or lead a Wordshop for Open Books in 2010? The literacy department is open to your ideas for classes and workshops that benefit adult learners, families, or youth. We will consider one-time, multiweek, and year-round offerings -- daytime and evening, weekend or weekday, depending on the best time to reach desired constituents. We also welcome partnerships with other organizations.

Interested? Fill out our quick form and let us know! We look forward to hearing from you.

Zines And Thieves
Zines and Thieves

A Zine-Making Wordshop for Teens

Wondering what to do with that gigantic pile of writing sitting on your desk? Stop waiting for someone to discover your talent and publish it yourself! "But wait", you may say, "publish it myself!? Will that make my writing legit if someone else isn't giving it the thumbs-up first?" In Zines and Thieves, you will banish the old, crusty notions of publishing, get the chance to show off your writing skills, and learn the basics of zine creation and DIY publishing. The next time somebody sneers at you for not making your literary debut, you can point them in the direction of your latest creation and let out a triumphant, "Ha ha, naysayer! I have a zine!"

Join Open Books for five spring sessions of creative writing! We will read and analyze passages (prose and poetry!), brainstorm, write, and share stories about our lives, families, neighborhoods and memories. You can work on your own, in small groups, and with our wonderful writing coaches to perfect your stories. Participants will be invited to perform their work, and Open Books will publish select pieces. These sessions are open to all levels of writers.
