Publishing Academy FAQs

Why year-long vs. summer only?

Your students are so talented and after years of running this program for the month of July, we realizes that we were not allowing students to fully realize their potential or stories in the timeframe we give them. It takes more than a month to write a great novel and we want to support students in committing themselves to a piece of work that they can really put their blood, sweat, and tears into. We’ve heard so many students tell us that they just don’t have enough time to really review and revise their work and so we are trying to give them the time they need to write their masterpieces. Also, we hope to build a sense of camaraderie and community in this cohort of students. Beyond their time with us, they can reach out to their peers to brainstorm and review their writing.

What if I can’t make every session?

We would love to have your student at every session but we realize what a feat that is. It’s ok to miss a few sessions. All materials will be accessible online.

If I cannot commit to year-long Publishing Academy, can my student still have their manuscript published?

All students can have their manuscript published but it will all happen after April 2018. Students who cannot attend year-long PA will have the year to tinker with their writing and can access coaches and or lead teachers via email at any time.

Who are the instructors?

Publishing Academy is led by the Open Books Program Staff.  As a team we hold degrees in Creative Writing, English Literature, Dramatic Writing, and Elementary Education, as well as Masters Degrees in Literacy, Special Ed, and Film Theory.
