Internships at Open Books

Calling talented and passionate literacy aficionados! Are you looking for a part-time internship where you’ll gain valuable skills and contacts, make a difference every day, and only have to make coffee if you personally plan to drink it? Join us!

Open Books Literacy Interns are responsible for assisting with the day-to-day operations of Open Books’ literacy programs. These internships are designed for people who want to work directly with youth across Chicago, as well as get a glimpse behind the scenes of a literacy nonprofit.

The program team at Open Books, which operates out of our West Loop office and throughout the city, welcomes applications from interested candidates to join us as a Literacy Intern. The Literacy Intern will have the unique opportunity to work directly with youth and volunteers in our literacy programs and will gain valuable experience working with a vibrant and energetic literacy and creative writing nonprofit.

Ideal Candidates Will Possess...

– An enthusiastic and positive attitude
– Great organizational skills
– Ability to take initiative and show leadership
– Passion for Open Books’ literacy mission
– Experience working with children or desire to learn

Availability and Commitment

Literacy Interns commit to the position for a minimum of one semester (12-16 weeks), and must be available during regular weekday hours. While time in the office varies, most interns work between 10 and 25 hours per week. Ideally, Interns commit to a Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday schedule.

Open Books brings on Literacy Interns in the fall, winter/spring, and summer. There are usually 5-8 interns working with the Program Team at any given time.

Projects You Might Encounter

Literacy Interns may assist with a plethora of Open Books initiatives, including leading programs and workshops, developing new curricula, conducting research about trends in literacy and education, and more!

Additionally, almost every single intern acts as a Site Leader for Open Books Reading Buddies.
